Tenzin Choden/ Thimphu The COVID-19 outbreak in the country is attributed to the presence of the COVID delta variant in the country, confirms the Ministry of Health. From total samples sequenced, 87 per cent is delta variant, 10 per cent is beta variant, and 3 per cent is alpha variant in the series of outbreaks in the country. The B.1.617.2 strain, officially known as the delta variant, is a highly contagious variant of COVID-19. It appears to be more infectious than other variants, and it also gives more resistance to health controls and preventions such as isolation. MoH's press release confirms that the most prevalent causing a series of outbreaks in the country is attributed to the presence of the COVID delta variant in the country. From total samples sequenced, 87 per cent is delta variant, 10 per cent is beta variant, and 3 per cent is alpha variant. The Delta variant is regarded as more transmissible and is more likely to lead to hospitalizations. Additionally, MoH's press release also cautions the general public to take the basic COVID-19 precautionary measures seriously, such as wearing a face mask that fully covers the nose and mouth, washing hands regularly, maintaining physical distance, and avoiding mass gathering and staying home as far as possible. The delta COVID-19 variant was first detected in India. According to the World Health Organization, it reports the presence of the variant in more than 80 countries. The variant is also upgraded from a "variant of interest" to a "variant of concern." Meanwhile, WHO introduced the new naming system for variants of COVID-19 with Greek letters; the UK variant, for instance, is labelled as Alpha, the South African Beta, the Indian as Delta, Peru as Lambda. It was to simplify discussions and to help remove the stigma from the names associated with the country. Delta variant of Covid-19 mutates into 'Delta Plus' or 'AY. 1' variant. World Health Organization has recently declared the Delta Plus and Lambda variants as "variant of interest"-needing to study more on them.
