Medical education event held in Thimphu after three years gap

Health minister, Lyonpo Dasho Dechen Wangmo and India’s ambassador to Bhutan, Sudhakar Dalela, graced the medical education event jointly conducted by the Royal Government of Bhutan (RGoB) and the Indian Military Training Team (IMTRAT) on continuing medical education (CME) at the faculty of traditional medicine on September 24, 2022.
Considering the existential menace of cancer in Bhutan, the theme for the event was ‘Technological Advances in Cancer with Special Reference to Cervical Cancer-A Skill Based Approach.’
The event had been an important activity to share experiences and enhance knowledge between the medical fraternity of IMTRAT and Bhutan, however, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this could not be held for the last three years.
The   CME 2022 commenced with ceremonial lamp lighting by the dignitaries followed by an address by the dignitaries.
Lyonpo Dasho, Dechen Wangmo in her address highlighted the concern of cervical cancer affecting the population of the Kingdom of Bhutan. The health minister also spoke on how the state has taken it upon itself to eradicate and control cervical cancer.
Lyonpo Dechen Wangmo also thanked the IMTRAT for providing the platform in form of a meeting to discuss the overarching threat of cancer and asked all the participants to make the best use of this opportunity.
India’s ambassador to Bhutan, Sudhakar Dalela in his keynote address hailed Indo-Bhutan cooperation in all spheres and complemented Bhutan’s initiative in the eradication of cervical cancer.
Commandant of IMTRAT, Major General Zubin A Minwalla, YSM felicitated all dignitaries and conveyed his gratitude for all the support provided by RGoB for the event.
The event is planned over two days with sub-themes of Childhood Cancer, Cervical Cancer, Lungs, and Oral Cancer.
The event registered a total of 19 speakers including five Indian Army super specialists who came all the way from India and one renowned speaker Paediatric Haemato-Oncologist and Bone Marrow Transplant Physician Dr. Rasmi Palassery, from MS Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore to speak on the subject.
The event saw active participation from a large number of delegates. Dr. Kinzang P Tshering, president of KGUMS, officials from RGoB, Royal Bhutan Army (RBA), and the delegates from the medical fraternity of Bhutan. The event saw unprecedented attendance of more than 130 participants who displayed keen enthusiasm to learn from the experiences of the speakers.
