248 people went missing this year

Mentally challenged, alcoholics, substance abusers, and lovers eloping make up the missing person list with RBP
248 people went missing from January this year till date as per the record maintained with Royal Bhutan Police (RBP). Of which 156 are male, 95 females including 36 children went missing.
Deputy Chief of the police at the crime and operation division, Colonel Passang Dorji said, “There are lots of factors and reasons for cases like missing people. Generally, too many people are getting lost, in some instances, few of them are alcoholic, mentally unstable, stressed and people with depression”.
He added, “Chronic alcoholics, people with mental health problems, and substance abusers tend to get lost anywhere due to their mental state affairs as they are not aware of themselves and lost their routes”.
While a few of the people fail to report back and update the status after being found. At times a complainant files a missing person case just a few minutes after the person is not at home and in most cases the person is back at home during the same night or just 1 to 2 days later.
The complainant reported to the police immediately but later they fail to report to the police if they are found. If any individual does not report to the police, it is considered a crime, and they can be penalized under the penal code for failure to report.
Meanwhile, the records with RBP registered in 2021 are 410 people representing 258 males, 110 females, and 42 children. Of those 379 people were found.
Colonel Passang Dorji said that another reason for the high number of missing cases is elopement is also reported missing. “Youth tends to run away from reality and do not wish to study,” said the Colonel.
Some laborers are reported missing; however, during the investigation, police found that they have left for their own hometowns. These tend to add up to higher statistics of an increase in missing people.
Police after a missing person is found, find out the reasons and logic behind such as if they have or are involved in any criminal activities following clear investigations.
Few persons are reported missing multiple times. Deputy Chief of Police of crime and operation said, “Police are doing their best in battling any kind of cases filed and reported with RBP. As public civil servants, we are doing our best in the service to the public.”
The police also claimed that to prevent such incidents and cases every citizen of Bhutan should work together and shoulder responsibilities for our own country and society.
Police officials said, “Parents should not be negligent and we shall never leave it to one agency or person, instead we must work together”.
This year, from January to August, 287 people were reported missing. The police also recorded 248 missing people found. However, 39 people are still missing.
RBP claimed that they are still investigating and searching for the missing people.
