Bhutan has to make a break, says promoter of Miss Bhutan 2022 pageant

From 25 shortlisted contestants one will be crowned Miss Bhutan 2022

Twenty five contestants, shortlisted after auditions for the Miss Bhutan 2022 Pageant were all set to take the country and the world by storm and were undergoing their grooming sessions, at the Royal Thimphu College. However, the pandemic and the restrictions that followed did not permit successive events of the Pageant to unfold and all 25 are now at their homes.
But, Karma Tshering, promoter of this national event is undeterred and says that despite challenges, including lack of funds, the event will be organized this year as it is the forum that provides young Bhutanese women the opportunity to display their skills, talents, and to further advance their careers. More importantly, Bhutan has to make a break in this event at the international level as “none from Bhutan has ever been seen, walking that ramp.”
One of Bhutan’s first artists trained in the field of
filmmaking and director of Bhutan’s first commercial movie “Jigdrel,” Karma Tshering is a known face in Bhutan’s social circle. He is recipient of Best Film Director Award for the film “Chepai Bu” in 2001 followed by another award in the same category for the film “6 Boys,” the next year.
According to Karma, there will be the Preliminary Round and The Grand Finale Round, with the Jury members comprising eminent, respected members of the Bhutanese and International Community. “There will be eight jurors in the Preliminary Round and upto eleven jurors in The Grand Finale round. There are no entry fees and no SMS voting for Miss Bhutan 2022. The panel of judges will select the winner of Miss Bhutan 2022,” Karma asserts.
Winners of Miss Bhutan 2022 will have the opportunity to participate in international beauty pageant contests. “Having a Bhutanese young woman walk the international ramp representing our country will help enhance our soft power and promote tourism. More people of the world will get to know Bhutan more as an independent GNH country,” Karma emphasizes.
Karma adds that the pageant aims to provide young Bhutanese women the same kind of opportunities as their counterparts in other parts of the world including education, travel and cross-cultural experiences. “Young Bhutanese women deserve the chance to be seen as part of their traditional culture and also beyond their culture, as contemporary, modern young women,” he says, adding millions of people all over the world are interested in the international beauty pageants and watch to see who represents each nation. And Bhutan has to make a break as “none from Bhutan has ever been seen.”
Additionally, Karma says there is a need of role models for Bhutanese women, across a variety of professions, attitudes, skills and interests which such pageants would create. “Bhutanese girls are like girls everywhere; they need role models who have grown into skilled, educated and productive members of society. At present, we have little and there is always the need for more women to emerge as role models for the younger generation, as spokespersons of our culture,” Karma says.
He adds that Miss Bhutan will celebrate womanhood, and at the same time provide advocacy of worthy causes. He says many people admire and aspire to be a beauty queen, and that beauty queens would be a good and effective advocate of worthy causes.
On attributes contestants would require to be crowned the Queen, Karma says it takes a lot of courage to go on stage and be judged by people on skills they think should count for a specific title. “Beauty is definitely not the only ingredient to success. One’s personality and attitude all reflect on the ramp,” the promoter adds. As such, those shortlisted have been undergoing training and grooming to instill and strengthen their etiquette, attitude, poise, projection and communication. “The skills taught by the professionals will not only help contestants prepare adequately for Miss Bhutan Pageant but will also be a valuable tool in their general life and the business environments too. The goal here is not just about winning a crown for Bhutan, but gifting them tools for their journey that will pave way for them to realize their aspirations.”
Once the grooming session is completed, the contestants will prepare themselves for the Preliminary Round where they will be judged by a panel of judges on rounds like Talent Round, Evening Gown Round, National Costume Round, Question and Answer rounds, including others.
The event will be made public through the national television (BBS), Shangreela (OTT platform) and the promoter’s You-tube channel (youtube/MPC bhutan entertainment).
The Grand Finale will take place a week after the Preliminary round, where  the results of the Preliminary Round will be announced. The event will conclude after the Crowning of the New MISS BHUTAN 2022. The event will also be made public through the national television, BBS, Shangreela (OTT platform), and You-tube channel (youtube/MPC bhutan entertainment).
In a three day audition 25 contestants have been selected:
one from Bumthang, Haa, Paro, Punakha, Thimphu, Trashiyangtse, Trongsa, Sarpang, Tsirang and Zhemgang Dzongkhags; two from Lhuntse, three from Trashigang, Samtse and Wangduephodrang Dzongkhags and four from Chukha Dzongkhag.
The 25 contestants were accommodated at the Business Executive Center of Royal Thimphu College for almost 2 months. Free food and accommodation were provided. Contestants underwent grooming session and attended lectures and motivational talks by important Resource Speakers from various government organizations, international and private sector.
But it is not an easy task. “During the time of the pandemic, getting fund to organize the event was the biggest challenge. Based on the value of the event, knowledge the contestants receive from the resources speakers and long term benefit of the country, few companies came forward to support the initiative,” Karma says. However, compared with the scale of the event, the funds received from the sponsors did not even meet the expenses.
The lockdown in the middle of the event further added to the loss.
Due to lockdown, the grooming session had to be stopped in the middle and all the contestants home. “We are left with few important classes like dinning etiquette, international Etiquette, public speaking (in English and Dzongkha), Ramp walk and motivational talks followed by the Preliminary round and the Grand Finale round,” Karma shares.
And he is undeterred. “Once the lockdown is lifted, we will resume the event and crown the New Miss Bhutan 2022.”
