Despite restrictions imposed due to the pandemic, individuals and organizations within Bhutan were not deterred from observing the sixth birth anniversary of His Royal Highness (HRH), Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck, who was born at Lingkana Palace on February 5, 2016. The significance of the day was amplified by an unprecedented snowfall, with several parts of the country experiencing snowfall either for the first time or after decades, including the historic Punadewachenpoi Phodrang (Punakha Dzong).

The Zhung Dratshang in its official social media platform said that the Majestic Punakha Dzong is covered by a blanket of snow on the auspicious occasion of HRH the Gyalsey’s 6th birth anniversary. Sharing that Punakha received snowfall over 6 decades ago during Je Thinley Lhundrup’s (1956-1961) time, the Zhung Dratshang has said “it is a very auspicious sign that Punakha received its first snowfall after 64 years coinciding with the 6th Birth Anniversary of His Royal Highness Gyelsay Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck.” “We believe that this signifies great leadership of HRH the Gyalsey in the future.”
Kurims (prayers) for His Royal Highness the Gyalsey were conducted in the Pung-Thim Dratshang, 18 Rabdeys, and Shedras/Lobdras of the Zhung Dratshang.

Meanwhile His Holiness the Je Khenpo granted a poem on the significance of the snowfall in Punakha coinciding with the sixth birth anniversary of HRH Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck.
The ministers of health and foreign affairs, Dasho Dechen Wangmo and Lyonpo Tandin Dorji, lit butter lamps and offered prayers at the Dorji Dratsey Neykhang, Tashichhodzong.

While hundreds of people offered their prayers and wishes to HRH using the social media platforms, teachers and students of Yoezerling Higher Secondary School, Paro, who are functioning in containment offered their prayers for HRH’s good health and long life. “Just like the unprecedented snow-cladding of Punakha Dzong in about 6 decades, our Gyalsey is the ultimate source of unprecedented peace and happiness for us. On this day, prayers are the least we can offer as our wishes for HRH’s joy, prosperity and long life,” Chencho Tshering, the School’s principal said.

In Thimphu, clients and staff of Chithuen Phenday Association (CPA) lit butter lamps and recited prayers for half a day at the Association’s Center for Mind and Wellness at Taba. Dawa Penjor, Program Officer said that CPA intends to dedicate every fifth of the month by offering prayers for HRH, Gyalsey’s good health and long life. “We now have a Lam within our midst, which makes it easier for us,” he said, adding that in the “well being of HRH, lies the well being of the nation.”
