Addressing the nation through the Bhutan Broadcasting Service (BBS) on February 4, 2022, Health Minister Dasho Dechen Wangmo called for people to take their own responsibilities of adhering to the Covid protocols seriously and informed the nation that as of now three Covid-19 patients were in critical condition. The broadcast also saw the health minister saying that as the focus is on the Omicron variant, normal health services in high risk areas are being affected.

In what Lyonpo said is a serious concern, she added that as the country witnessed the number of Covid-19 patients cross the 5,000 mark, about 269 children below 12 years of age have tested positive, who are amongst the group of 200,000 unvaccinated people in the country. Further, Lyonpo said that about 60 people who are above the age of 65 have been affected.

In what is alarming for a small country like Bhutan, Lyonpo mentioned that within a short period of time the number of people testing positive reached 2,000 and that 8 people on an average tested positive each day.

Lyonpo reiterated the need for people to follow instructions of the government especially related to following Covid protocols. While expressing that she understood the inconveniences and other problems people faced, she said people need to take their responsibilities seriously. She said that the Omicron variant is highly transmissible and that people should be extra cautious and test themselves if they had any symptoms of the virus.

Meanwhile, the minister also said that as the nation continues to divert its attention to the virus, health services in high risk zones are being affected.
