With just a supposedly twisted and convoluted question if the author would reveal or not about his plot, our Reporter Tenzin Choden asked - “What ended up happening?” – read the revelation of the young author. In my journey as a journalist, an interesting part is meeting young talented writers. The immense potential they possess is worthy of tons of appreciation. I appreciate the maturity in their thoughts. I especially adore their firm control over the language intricacies. Speaking to them imbibes a feeling of hope and belief in our future generation. Today I want to share my interview with a young writer – Pasang Dorji, 25-year-old, and he has a brother who also authored a book, I touched on the book by his brother. Pasang Dorji recaps: I am a storyteller, not a writer. I think people like a good, story, a good tale; they like to be able to turn the page. I think that's the secret but it’s a god given gift, you can't be taught it.” 1. What inspired you to write this book? Writing a book was one of my biggest dreams. I was looking for a good time to publish it. However, about three years ago, I met a woman online. She was going through some of the toughest times in her life. She wanted me to write a story. As an aspiring, I accepted her request and wrote her story to post on my Facebook page 'The Art of Pen'. After completion of her story, I heard that she committed suicide. I was shattered. I couldn't save her. However, she had the hope in life to live more and do more. This Empty Chair is like a letter to her. It's inspired by the hopes she had before she left. 2. Is there anything people may miss and you don’t wish them to miss it? If you wish, reveal to us anything juicy about the book. I mentioned in some of my posts that the woman committed suicide. Some people ask me that I have not mentioned about it. As a writer, I didn't want her to die in the story. I wanted her to live like any other women with her own joyful story. 3. What did you learn when writing the book? While writing a book, I learned that writing is the way of knowing yourself. When i write, I know about my capabilities, strengths and weaknesses. If I think I am weak in some, I try to improve on. I also learned about why consistency is important while writing a novel. If you happen to take a long break, the connection between plots is lost. 4. What surprised you the most? The thing surprised me the most was, orders I received from men. Comparatively, women in Bhutan read more than men. Many men are not interested in reading. However, The Empty Chair received a lot of orders from a huge number of men. I am truly surprised 5. The title of the book created a hype – what made you decide on the title – The Empty Chair, is the title inspired by real life events? The Empty Chair is actually a song. The song was inspired by the life of Photojournalist Jim who was captured and beheaded by ISIS during Syrian Civil War in 2015. The Empty Chair is a Metaphor and readers should figure out how I justify in my book. 6. Is there sort of competition in the family to write as your brother also authored a book? Will you siblings work together on a book in the future, co-author a book? We grew up writing together. However, there's no competition between us. I appreciate his works and he does the same. We keep supporting each other. In future, we hope to collaborate and co-author a book but, we are worried too since our approaches to writing and the style is quite different. 7. Please give our young authors, your peers’ things they must consider to write a book particularly when writing might be a luxury but not printing it. My suggestions to aspiring writers are, I. Before they write, they must read. ii. They should not be hurrying their publication because the more we wait, the better our book becomes. Some writers take decades to complete a book. Bhutanese books are, I must say a hurried publication. We lack certain qualities due to the limited time we spent on books. I still feel that working on The Empty Chair for four years is not enough. I could not give the justice a book needs. I hope I don't regret later in life. However, I am so happy about the plot structure and style I could impose. I am also happy about the title too.
