Minister transfers business ownership to focus on work

Puran Gurung/ Thimphu The minister of labour and human resources, Lyonpo Karma Dorji, is transferring his shares in eDruk Private Limited to his wife and children so that he can discharge his new responsibilities with undivided attention. Lyonpo Karma Dorji owns 80%of the shares in the private tech company he established and headed until he was elected as the MP from Nganglam constituency. “I am surrendering the shares as a moral responsibility and in order that I can focus fully on my responsibilities in the ministry,” said Lyonpo Karma Dorji. Among other projects, eDruk is implementing the Digital Drukyul flagship project which was launched by the present government. eDruk Private Limited is taking up work worth Nu 81 million in the project which has an overall budget of Nu 2.557 billion. Digital Flagship work being carried out by eDruk involves replacing internet lines with optic fibre in the 10 dzongkhags of the southern and western Bhutan. It will connect even the smallest public service offices starting from the remote gewogs of a dzongkhag. The dzongkhags in western Bhutan where eDruk is replacing fibre optics are Gasa, Thimphu, Tsirang, Punakha, Paro, Haa and Wangdue Phodrang besides Chhukha, Samtse and Dagana in southern Bhutan. According to the minister, his works as a minister will be seamless and none of his past works will disturb him in discharging his duties. Project Digital Drukyul was launched as an Information and Communications Technology Masterplan for Bhutan by the present government. eDruk has completed about 70 per cent of the work, replacing the existing internet lines with optic fibres.
